Depart from Fez across Saiss plain, which is one of the fertile country fields.

As we advance in the road; the first slopes of the Middle Atlas mountains appears in the horizon.

The first stop will be at the small town of Imouzzer, which is known for its Apple Festival in September.

This area is known as one of the major producers of Apples in Morocco and also known for its lakes that were formed after some volcanic activity in the region millions of years ago.

After driving through the Oak forest we will be in Ifrane; often named the “Switzerland of Morocco”.

Known by its Alpine climate, this Moroccan town has a remarkable European style, as if it were an Alpine village.

Because of its elevation, the town experiences snow during the winter months and a cool climate during the summer.

Animals to be found in the vicinity include the threatened Barbary Macaque.

We will cross the cedar forest to get to the national park where more than 70% of the Barbary apes (Macaques) exist.

Ifrane is a colonial “hill station,” and a “garden city” a mountain resort, a provincial administrative center, and a university town.

The inhabitants of the village today mostly speak Tamazight.

Azrou is one of the famous Amazigh cities in Morocco.

It’s also a small market town and hill resort at the heart of the Middle Atlas region of Morocco.

The word ‘Azrou’ means rock in Tamazight and at the middle of the town next to the large new mosque is the eponymous rock.

The town has a relaxed air and good hiking in the wooded vicinity.

It is ideally located as a base for exploring the cedar forests.

The heart of Azrou, Place Mohammed V.

Nearby there is a covered market and a number of craftsmen working on the premises as you may look out for the Middle Atlas carpets.
